ગુરુ રામાનંદ સ્વામીએ નીલકંઠવર્ણીને વિ.સં. ૧૮૫૭ કાર્તિક સુદી એકાદશીને દિવસે (તા. ૨૮-૧૦-૧૮૦૦) મહાદિક્ષા આપી અને તેમનાં સહજાનંદ સ્વામી તથા નારાયણ મુનિ એમ બે નામ પાડ્યાં. મહાદિક્ષા આપ્યા પછી ગુરુ રામાનંદ સ્વામીએ વિ.સં. ૧૮૫૮ કાર્તિક સુદી એકાદશી (તા. ૧૬-૧૧-૧૮૦૧)નાં રોજ પોતાના આશ્રિતો-અનુયાયીઓ સમક્ષ પોતે સ્થાપેલા ઉદ્ધવ સંપ્રદાયનું આચાર્યપદ સહજાનંદ સ્વામીને સોંપતા જેતપુરમાં તેમને પોતાની ગાદી સુપ્રત કરી..
